putting nature back where it belongs
Alright, so awhile back, I wrote about how Wilma was growing out of her litterbox, and our subsequent shopping trip for her deluxe new Poopmaster DX. It's approximately the size of a NewYork loft, with privacy roof and freshness filter. It's big enough for her and Harry to share. If anything happens, we could probably all use it as a fallout shelter. Recently, though, I've felt increasingly guilty about the chemicals I expose them to with that Fresh Step litter. Sure, it works-but it's also dusty and heavily perfumed. Didn't seem right to me. If they were outdoors, it's not like there's big piles of Fresh Step in the woods. The stuff is practically unnatural. On my last litter shopping trip, I decided to try something new. Or, at least something more natural. I'd tried one bag of the clumping litter before, but Wilma didn't care too much for that. Neither did I, with its tiny granules that can track all over if you don't vacuum a lot. Plus, it's not really good for cats. Remember-they groom themselves with their tongue. How would you feel, ingesting a bunch of CLAY? Gross. So I saw this bag on sale at the pet store. "Feline Pine", it said, and it lived up to its name. No heavy smells in that stack. In fact, it just smelled like outdoors. Not only that, but it was comparatively lightweight, and about half the price of the Fresh Step. And darn if I don't like saving a buck. Two mice on a string and a snack bag later, off I went to check out. When I got home, I changed out the litter box and poured in about an inch-and-a-half of the new Feline Pine. That's about half of what's called for with ordinary litters, so already I'm impressed. Wilma and Harry do the obligatory sniff curiosity test, and decide they like it. They'll do their business in the pine pellets. Score one for Ma Nature! It's been about two weeks since then, and I'm just changing out the box now. With most litters, one of the other disadvantages is that whenever you scoop, you have to dump another cup of the stuff in there to replace it. It's literally more money down the toilet. This is not the case with Feline Pine! That initial amount is enough for two cats, for two weeks. No smell, no mess, no dust, and no tracking. How do you know when to change it? With other litters, you're either on a schedule (my approach), or the odor becomes too unbearable for you to live with it (not my approach). Feline Pine just dissolves whenever it gets wet. When you've got a litterbox full of sawdust, it's time to change it out, and use the discard for compost. Of course, you still have to scoop out the solid stuff each day, but big deal. If you're switching from another litter, this stuff will pay for itself in one bag. It sure has at my house. Feline Pine, and other fine natural pet products |
