april, 2001 Here's the Great Dane review!
|
it's a diner! it's a bar! it's dinerbar! As often as possible, I've made it a point to keep my reviews local, After all, thousands of people are reviewing NYC establishments all the time. I think me and about three other people review stuff in the NC Triad. But this week, since this little nook of Spanish Harlem has been so friendly to me, and Noel's friend just opened the place, it's only appropriate to make the fine folks at Dinerbar honorary Denizens. Three words: macaroni and cheese. They're my new best friends! So, let's say you're a Carolina Hoosier in the city, and you're overtaken by an urge for an emergency tub of comfort food. Get on the green line subway immediately! Then take it to the 103rd St. exit and sprint on up to 1569 Lexington Ave., between 100 and 101st St. If you see Daniel, one of the proprietors, in his chef coat, say hi and have a seat. Then, prepare yourself for some of the most conscientious service you've had in months...and portions that remind you of home. We started off with coffee, and saw real quick that at Dinerbar, they don't do anything halfway. Our brew was fresh ground, and pressed from the cappucino machine. Our mugs had a frothy head, just like good draft beer. Not a bad way to get a-cranking in the morning. As Noel and I sipped and chatted, I was struck by the warm service we received. Everyone demonstrated a great deal of ownership in their job, and in the success of the still-young Dinerbar. They were happy to make recommendations, cared that we were comfortable and satisfied, and smiled while they worked. Not only that, but everything was yum-my. Snarf, snarf, kids! We started by splitting a small bowl of homemade macaroni and cheese. Creamy, flavorful, and aromatic, we shamelessly heaped healthy spoonfuls until our bowls were empty. It was belly-patting good. So we shamelessly did that, too. Pat, pat...urp. (That was Noel.) We then each received a MOST scrumptious falafel burger plate...an enormous, kaiser-roll-held burger made of falafel grains. Nearly covering the burger were fresh, crispy fries. We were able to eat half of our fare, which reheated beautifully for an evening snack. It is a perfect lunch, if you've got a big-city hankering for excellent, super-reasonable American food. Not only that, but the restroom is big and tidy. In New York City, that's about as close to a blessing as you can find.
